Could you send an example of how you invoke gfont?

Right, because language expansions are handled in the last pass.
You have to define the 2 gif files
<gfont file="blabla-en.gif" notag>English_Blabla</gfont>
<gfont file="blabla-fr.gif" notag>French_Blabla</gfont>

After that, you insert images with <lang:star: blabla-*.gif> for
